CRANLEIGH GOES TO SEMUR-EN-AUXOIS
The 'entente' was extremely 'cordiale' when members from Cranleigh visited their twinning counterparts in Semur-en-Auxois from 7th to 10th August. Eleven members – some old and some new – congregated at the Mairie on Friday afternoon to be welcomed by the glamorous lady Maire and to be claimed by their enthusiastic hosts for the weekend. Most had travelled across France in above-average temperatures and near-drought conditions, only to arrive in Semur in a sudden and intense downpour, which although inconvenient was certainly welcomed by the French farmers and gardeners alike.
Our hosts had devised a full programme beginning with a visit to Ampelopsis at Massigny – a vineyard producing its own wines together with a museum, an education centre a garden featuring all of the most popular varieties of grapes used in wine production and, best of all, a chance to sample several wines from the Domaine itself.
After lunch in the quaint town of Chatillon sur Seine, we had a fascinating visit to the Museum of Archaeology there. The star exhibit is the fabulous bronze Vase de Vix (5th Century BC), discovered in 1953 and now restored to its original splendour measuring 1.64m in height and weighing 208 kgs. The Museum contained many other fascinating and important bronze and gold artifacts.
For some, the evening was a chance to relax with their host families, while for others there was a Concert of Baroque music by C18th female composers beautifully performed in the stunning barn of the Chateau de Bussy-Rabutin. A picnic on tables arranged in the candlelit courtyard of the Chateau afterwards was a truly memorable experience.
Despite more rain on Sunday (we must have brought it with us!!) there was free time to walk the picturesque streets of Semur, enjoy the Sunday market, relax with their hosts and, in one case, even to find a boot fair!
The climax of the visit was a convivial evening meal produced by our friends from Semur. Imaginative mixtures of French and English were spoken, many warm sentiments were exchanged and it was agreed that we should do it all again next year – only this time in Cranleigh!
